Comparison
Water-based vs silicone lubricant.
The single most important purchase decision after the toy itself. Water-based is the universal-compatibility default; silicone outlasts everything but bonds with silicone toys. The choice is rarely close once you know your kit.
| Spec | Water-based | Silicone-based |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible with silicone toys | YES | NO — bonds, degrades surface |
| Compatible with glass / steel | YES | YES |
| Compatible with condoms | YES (latex + non-latex) | YES (latex + non-latex) |
| How long it lasts | Reapply every 5-15 min | Lasts 60+ minutes |
| Works underwater | Washes away | Stays — works in shower / bath |
| Easiest to clean up | Soap and water | Requires soap; can stain fabric |
| pH-balanced for body | Most brands, check label | Most brands |
| Anal play | OK with reapplication | Excellent — slickness lasts |
| Typical UK price (250 ml) | ~£6–£12 | ~£15–£30 |
The verdict
Default to water-based. It is compatible with every toy material (including silicone), every condom type, and re-applies easily with a drop of water. Silicone-based is the right choice for shower/bath use, anal play and very long sessions — but never use it on a silicone toy.
